Benediction: Killing music

You’ve probably heard of Benediction, even if you have no idea what they sound like. And if you have listened to Benediction, it was probably “Subconscious Terror”, their debut and most popular record to date. Last album these brits released was in 2001, so it sure took ‘em long enough to get their shit together. Let’s see if it stinks. As soon as you put on “Killing Music”, an interesting thing will occur; you will smile. It will be a timid smile at first, you won’t even show your teeth. It will just be that involuntary spasm, a need to show joy. This happens inevitably when one is unexpectedly blasted with real old school death metal.
Benediction isn’t trying, at all, to break the mold, innovate, blow your mind, change the history of metal. Instead, as most people with common sense do, they simply put forth the best they can, and try to have fun doing it. The end result, as you would expect, is that the listener is entertained and has a shit load of fun. Dave Hunt’s grunts and growls are sublimely appropriate for the fast, yet not too fast, death metal performed here. The riffs are endless, killer assault after brutal mayhem destruction. Add to that the fucking, as always, solid drum work from Nick Barker and you have yourself one god damn good death metal album.
Fun. That’s the only thing that keeps popping into my mind as I listen to this album again and again. It’s just so fucking fun. Songs always around the 3 minute mark, blasting away against the evils of society and the pretentiousness of new age hacks. May Satan bless these simple souls.
